Studio policy:

I.  Tuition

      Tuition is payable in advance in monthly installments which reserves your time slot. Payment is always the same flat rate, regardless of how many times the student is absent or what circumstances surround the absences.


      Studio Monthly Tuition Rates:  based on 48 lessons offered per year

        • $120 /month for weekly 30 minute lessons
        • $180 /month for weekly 45 minute lessons
        • $240 /month for weekly 60 minute lessons


      Scott Anderson Monthly Tuition Rates:  based on 45 lessons offered per year

        • $130 /month for weekly 30 minute lessons
        • $170 /month for weekly 45 minute lessons
        • $260 /month for weekly 60 minute lessons


      Lessons are offered every week except for:

      • Memorial Day
      • July 4th
      • Labor Day
      • Thanksgiving Day and the following day
      • December 24 thru January 1
      • Teacher vacation time (TBD as schedule allows - for instance, a week in the spring and two weeks in the summer.)
      • Recital events replace a lesson

Payment policy:

All clients must store a credit card or bank account with our secure, online payment processor.  Credit cards/bank accounts will be automatically charged on the first of the month.  (Processing fees apply.) If clients prefer to pay via check or other method, payment MUST be received 5 days before the 1st of the month.  The system is automated, there are no exceptions.

                      Individual lessons:

    • Individual lessons are available by appointment in certain circumstances.  These are typically advanced students, or adult students who cannot attend regular lessons.  Individual lessons are always 1 hour in length. Inquire for current rates.

II.  Attendance

Student Cancellations:

    • Students are expected to attend all lessons.  There will be no deductions for lessons missed by the student for any reason.
    • Students who need to cancel a lesson should do so on the online calendar if possible.  Lessons may be canceled at any point up to the start of the lesson.  A makeup credit is automatically created, which gives the option to book an open slot to make up the lesson. Open slots can be found on the online calendar.  Remember to check back because the calendar will change with every cancellation. After 90 days, the credit will expire and the lesson cannot be made up. Each student is limited to 5 makeup credits per calendar year.  Lessons cancelled in excess of that limit cannot be rescheduled. No-shows will not be issued a credit.
    • Students are asked to give as much advance notice as possible if they cannot attend a lesson.  This makes it easier to accommodate makeups when needed.

Teacher Cancellations:

    • If the teacher cancels a lesson for any reason then it will either be rescheduled or count as one of the teacher’s vacation weeks.

Terminating Lessons:

    • Students can discontinue lessons at any time.  Please provide two weeks notice if possible. The teacher reserves the right to terminate lessons for any reason, a pro-rated refund will be offered if applicable. 

Extended Absences:

    • If a student needs an extended absence, (for instance, going away for the summer) they may elect not to pay the monthly fee, however they will also be giving up their spot, which will be given to the next name on the waiting list.  It will not be possible to guarantee their slot unless they continue to make monthly payments.

III.  Special Events

    • Studio recitals are part of the curriculum and provide an invaluable tool in the student’s appreciation and understanding of music. Students participating in a recital are expected to watch all other performers.
    • Group lessons may be offered, up to 4 times a year, in place of that week’s regular lesson.  These will be fun gatherings of students to share works in progress, compare notes and hear each other’s work.  There may be groups for beginners, intermediate and advanced, as well as one for Jazz and another for composers.  The opportunity to meet and interact is a valuable learning opportunity as well as an enjoyable break in the routine.
    • Students may be asked to participate in evaluations, Pittsburgh Piano Teachers Association recitals, competitions and other special events.

IV.   Family/Student Responsibilities

  1. Positive parental involvement is essential, especially with younger players.  Parents are encouraged to assist with practice, particularly with younger beginners, and are welcome to observe lessons.  It is not required for parents to observe lessons, and in some cases it can make students self conscious or uncomfortable.  The decision to stay and observe depends on personal preference, but parents are always welcome.
  2. Practice:
    1. Learning to play music requires dedication and discipline on the part of the student.  Musical study is a partnership between student, parent, and teacher. The lesson is a very small part of the week.  It is up to the student and the parent to see that the remainder of the week is productive. A practice log is available to students and parents on the studio website, and it can be very helpful to establish a routine, set goals and follow through. Although the quality of the time is most important, here are some guidelines for daily practice, five times per week:
      5-8 years old: 15-20 mins  9-11 years old: 25-30 mins,  12-15 years old: 35-40 mins,  16 and older: 45-60 mins.  
    2. Environment:
      1. The instrument should be kept in tune and in good repair.
      2. There should be no distractions (phone, TV, other people playing in room, etc.)
  3. Discussions concerning student progress, schedule changes, billing questions, etc. should be initiated at the beginning of the lesson (or at a mutually agreed time) to avoid interfering with lesson time of the next student.
  4. Tardiness
    1. Student promptness is the responsibility of the student/parent; time lost will not be made up.
